    New Orleans City Tour

New Orleans is like a good memory that rests easy on your mind—the music is sweet, the food divine, the atmosphere captivating, and the pace is definitely more leisurely. Join us as we explore all that makes New Orleans America’s most European city.

As you ride past beautiful Jackson Square, your tour guide will reconstruct the first days of the old French City. The sights and sounds of the mighty Mississippi River, St. Louis Cathedral, Cabildo and Pontalba buildings are just some of the highlights of this area.

Continue past the French Market and the U.S. Mint and enjoy a “local's” chronology of events leading up to Hurricane Katrina and the days immediately following. Travel through parts of the Ninth Ward and Lakeview, some of the hardest hit areas of New Orleans which continue to be rebuilt. Witness the revival of this beautiful city by citizens who refuse to give in. You might also see different volunteer groups, from all over the world, working here to aid in the recovery. As you progress, look hard – there are water lines still to be seen, the spray painted signs left by the National Guard and many other reminders of a turbulent time for the residents of New Orleans.

Next, arrive on Esplanade Avenue, the outermost boundary of the French Quarter. Enjoy a stunning display of many fine Creole homes with delicate wrought iron fences and balconies. Passing by one of the city’s oldest cemeteries, learn about the unique above ground burial system.

Continuing toward the Lakefront, see Lake Pontchartrain and view the massive pumping station at the Seventeenth Canal. Following the crescent of the river to the old town of Carrollton and the route of the St. Charles streetcar, pass Tulane and Loyola Universities as the ancient oaks of Audubon Park come into view.

The heart of Uptown showcases some of the city’s loveliest neighborhoods, while the Garden District is distinguished by its Greek Revival architecture and splendid gardens. After this tour, you'll have a better understanding of events pre and post Katrina and the “Rebirth of New Orleans!"

Pre-registration and an additional fee are required.

New Orleans Tour - Brunch at Commander’s Palace and Garden District Tour (Elms Mansion)

Rated one of the top restaurants from the James Beard Foundation, this beautiful estate nestled in the Garden District is a Victorian fantasy in turquoise and white, complete with turrets, columns, and gingerbread. Enjoy brunch at this wonderfully traditional New Orleans restaurant in an atmosphere much like a well run party given by old friends with flowers, conviviality and most importantly, splendid food and wines.

Just a few miles from the French Quarter lays the Garden District. As you journey down St. Charles Avenue, view elegant homes built prior to the Civil War, primarily in the Greek Revival style of architecture. The first stop is the Van Benthuysen-Elms Mansion, located on St. Charles Avenue. Designed by Lewis E. Reynolds and built in 1869, this mansion exemplifies the grandeur of Italianate style architecture.

The tour will conclude at the New Orleans Opera Guild. This historic treasure of Pre-Civil War construction was built in 1858 by a wealthy commission merchant. The home is filled with fine 18th and 19th century furniture of European and Louisiana origin, paintings, porcelains, faience and objects de virtue from throughout the world. Chandeliers, wall sconces, and boiserie are from such distinguished provinces as the Hamilton Palace in Scotland, Pitti Palace in Italy, French Royal Chateau de Bercy and a former imperial Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
